Cary NC Group Wins Super Bowl Commercial Contest for Doritos

Congratulations to local Cary resident Josh Svoboda & his partners that won $650,000 for their winning Doritos Super Bowl Commercial - “Underdog”!

I was pulling for the group not only because of their local Cary ties but due to my friendship with Josh’s mother Cindy and his brother DJ – I volunteer with both of them at Hope Community Church.

Josh isn’t the only one in the family with creative talent – Josh’s autistic brother DJ travels on a regular basis, sharing his testimony and his story of how he has embraced his autism by creating his very own company – myimagiville.com

The winning commercial was filmed at Cary’s Fred G. Bond Park off High House Road. The group also won a runner-up spot for ‘Kids These Days” – filmed at Cary’s Waverly Place Shopping Center.

Cary Lochmere Home Owners Be on Alert!

Cary residents have the luxury of enjoying a high quality of life – which includes living in a Town of 140,000 people and not worrying much about crime – at least major crime – that’s why the news this week of several home break-ins while the families where home sleeping is big news & disturbing – the break ins occurred in the Lochmere area of Cary – a large planned unit development with lakes, walking trails, golf course etc (also home to yours truly).

Below is the press release from the Town of Cary – I usually do not cut and paste a blog post but with this I’m making an exception:

Town of Cary Police Department Seeks Help in String of Home Burglaries

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 12, 2010

CARY, NC – The Town of Cary Police Department is asking citizens for their help in locating suspects involved with recent home burglaries. During the overnight hours of January 10, 2010 and January 12, 2010, suspects gained entry into three occupied homes in the Lochmere area of Cary. Stolen property includes televisions, purses, wallets, electronic equipment and jewelry. No one was harmed during the robberies.

“How or if these burglaries are related is still being investigated, but what we can say for sure is that it’s a very serious concern for us any time break-ins occur while families are sleeping, and we need everyone’s help in protecting against these criminals,” said Captain Mike Williams.

To help prevent these types of crimes, the Town of Cary Police Department reminds citizens to:

• Keep all doors locked at all times, including garage doors, doors leading into garages, exterior doors and car doors.
• If installed, activate your home alarm system.
• Be watchful of any suspicious or idling vehicles in residential areas, especially at night.
• Call the police with any suspicions.

Town of Cary Remains One of the Safest Places to Live in the US.

CQ Press, who publishes the annual City Crime Rankings just released their annual report – the Town of Cary received the following distinguished rankings:

Safest Municipality in North Carolina for the 11th straight year.

Safest Municipality in the South East.

5th Safest in the Nation for populations between 100,000 and 499,999. (Cary”s current population estimated to be just under 140,000)

19th Safest in the Nation out of entire list without regard to population size.

While the rankings are very impressive it was noted that the town’s ranking dropped from the previous year high ranking of 3rd safest based on population and 15th safest overall. One reason for the decline – the 3 Cary women who died at the hand of domestic violence this past year – which is very unusual for Cary – a town which usually will not have a single murder over the course of a year.

Having lived in the Cary area my entire life I sometimes take for granted how safe our Town really is. The Cary Police strive hard to keep it that way! Which brings up a great takeaway point - don’t speed in Cary! The police have the time to write speeding tickets!
