Cary NC Group Wins Super Bowl Commercial Contest for Doritos

Congratulations to local Cary resident Josh Svoboda & his partners that won $650,000 for their winning Doritos Super Bowl Commercial - “Underdog”!

I was pulling for the group not only because of their local Cary ties but due to my friendship with Josh’s mother Cindy and his brother DJ – I volunteer with both of them at Hope Community Church.

Josh isn’t the only one in the family with creative talent – Josh’s autistic brother DJ travels on a regular basis, sharing his testimony and his story of how he has embraced his autism by creating his very own company – myimagiville.com

The winning commercial was filmed at Cary’s Fred G. Bond Park off High House Road.  The group also won a runner-up spot for ‘Kids These Days” – filmed at Cary’s Waverly Place Shopping Center.

American Tobacco Trail – Cary – White Oak Park Access

american tobacco trail cary white oak

What is the American Tobacco Trail?

It’s 22 miles of trails running from Cary to Durham – the trails are built over an old abandoned rail road track that dates back to the early 1900’s.    The American Tobacco Trail’s almost perfectly flat – which makes sense when you think of it being where a railroad track used to be – along the trail you will find yourself in tunnels, under highways & on bridges.

The trail is open to walking / running / hiking / bicycle riding and horse back.

One of the American Tobacco Trail public access points is in Cary – on White Oak Church Road – this site which is right around the corner from Cary’s upscale Copperleaf Community, has restrooms and ample parking.  If you haven’t explored the American Tobacco Trail you’re missing out – it’s incredible to think you can start out in Cary and ride your bike 20 plus miles and end up at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park!    A special thank you to the Triangle Rails to Trails Conservatory Organization for their hard work making this dream become a reality – we are truly blessed here in the Cary area with the wonderful parks & trails!

Cary or California? Cary Police on 2 Wheels

Okay, I’ll admit it – growing up I was a big fan of Ponch and John – yes I’m talking about the TV show ‘CHiP’s’  – which by the way, ever go back and watch one of those old shows?  Scary that I used to like that show – anyway  – when I stopped for lunch today at one of my favorite Cary mexican restaurants,  (Fiesta Mexicana in the Swift Creek Shopping Center) I grabbed my camera for a shot of one of Cary’s Police motorcycles parked right in front of the restaurant. What kind of police motorcycle for the Town of Cary?  BMW of course!  Seeing the police motorcycle transported me back to childhood memories of watching ‘CHiP’s’ – and yes I’ve had the theme song in my head all day.

It really made me stop and think how different (in a good way) Cary is today from the tiny rural community of my childhood days! So do you think if I get pulled over by one of these I can get out of a ticket by saying “I blogged about you?”, yea – me either.

The Cary Police have a fleet of four BMW  motorcycles as part of the Traffic Safety Team.

Christmas Eve at Hope Community Church, No Fish but 5,000 plus

Hope Community Church opened it’s doors on Christmas Eve for 4 identical worship services.  No fish, but over 5,000 people attended the services.

The 1,500 seat auditorium was nearly packed for all 4 services.  Okay, one clarification – the 4 services were not exactly identical – on paper they were supposed to be – the live donkey that made a brief appearance on stage the first few services decided to re-negotiate his contract and didn’t make it through all 4 services.   The people that attended experienced friendly volunteers eager to serve, incredibly talented musicians and singers, and even a little snow at the end, but most importantly it provided an open door on Christmas eve for any and all to come hear of God’s love.

Cary Real Estate Spotlights New IHOP Restaurant

Cary has it’s first IHOP Restaurant – We’ve had a Waffle House for years (yes sometimes I like a late night run for scattered smothered and covered) – but now we have a IHOP on Kildaire Farm Road in Cary.  It’s only been open a week and WOW was it busy today!  Claire Hanes and I had a brunch meeting – talking about very exciting plans for CaryRealEstate.com in 2010.  The service and food were both great – I had the spinach and chicken crepe – I would definitely get that again!  The IHOP is located at 1301 Kildaire Farm Road (919) 469-1835.  It’s in a free standing building which formerly was a steakhouse.

Town of Cary’s 1st Community Christmas Tree

town-of-cary-community-christmas-tree

Okay, so I added the word Christmas into the description of the tree, as the Town of Cary is calling it their Community Tree.  It’s a pretty neat idea to generate community involvement.  The town invited area businesses, Schools, Churches, Non-Profits and Clubs to create and submit an original ornament that represents their organization, thus the title “Community Tree“.

The ornaments adorn the official Town of Cary Community Tree, on display in Town Hall.  The town also illuminates a 30′ tall cedar tree on the town hall grounds.

If you’re interested in your organization being represented on next years tree you can find the info on the Town of Cary’s site.

Cary Real Estate Highlights Thai Restaraunt Lucky Pot

If you find yourself hungry on the east side of Cary then pop into Lucky Pot. It’s in the Kildaire Farms Food Lion Shopping Plaza at the intersection of Kildaire Farm Road and Penny Road.

Cary-Lucky Pot-Thai Food-OutsideLucky Pot features mainly a Thai menu (my personal favorite is the Thai Spicy Basil).  It’s a small shop – no seats – take out only.   If it’s a pretty day you can always go a 1/2 mile up the road to  the Town of Cary’s Hemlock Bluffs Park.  Inside Lucky Pot it’s always the same two ladies – they always have a smile on their face.   They use fresh not frozen ingredients and everything is prepared from scratch.  In addition to the Thai food they also serve a few coffee drinks and smoothies – just like all Thai restaurants right?  Thai, Coffee and Smoothies!

Lucky Pot’s Address: 2974 Kildaire Farm Rd.   919-362-1290.  Hours 11am-8pm Mon-Sat. Closed Sunday.

A Christmas present for you in Downtown Cary!

Christmas presentHere’s another splendid example of the good life in Cary, NC…the town is hosting what’s sure to be a fantastic day of enjoyment for the whole family, next Saturday, December 5th!

There’ll be Santa’s Workshop starting at 10am with crafts and refreshments for the 10yr and under crowd, with a visit by a certain someone from way up North!

Also on the agenda, is an art exhibit at Town Hall called ‘The Artist Within’ featuring works by Town employees and staff.

Apparently, the downtown Cary merchants will be participating with special refreshments, crafts and entertainment…

The Page-Walker History Center will host a Victorian Christmas celebration with refreshments and activities sure to please any age!

The evening will bring the annual tree lighting ceremony which will include live entertainment and refreshments.

And something I’m personally looking forward to is the radio play, ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ to be performed in the Cary Town Council Chambers!

Check out this article in the Cary Citizen for all the details and then, I hope to see you there!
