Town of Cary Needs Your Help to Draw Googles New Fiber Optic
Town of Cary is asking it’s citizens to take a few minutes to nominate Cary for Google’s new fiber optic internet service.
Below is the re-post from the Town of Cary press release:
To help boost its chances for success, the Town of Cary is asking Cary citizens to nominate their community to Internet search-engine great, Google, as the first and only location to install its blazing-fast experimental fiber-optic network. The connection promises to deliver data at 1 gigabit per second; that’s roughly 50 to 300 times faster than current DSL, cable and fiber-optic networks that connect most U.S. homes to the Internet. Simply go to Google’s nomination page and complete the short survey. The last day to nominate Cary is Friday, March 26.
PRIMARY CONTACTS:
Bill Stice, Director of Technology Services, (919) 469-4027
Deanna Boone, Deputy Public Information Officer, (919) 462-3908
Susan Moran, Public Information Officer, (919) 460-4951

Morrisville Parkway Extension will connect Davis Drive to NC Hwy 55
The Town of Cary has announced that work will begin on March 15th to complete 3 missing sections of Morrisville Parkway. The Morrisville Parkway Extension will connect the dots between Morrisville Parkway and Davis Drive all the way to NC Hwy 55.
Currently there are standalone sections of Morrisville Pkwy. The 3 missing pieces include a section between Davis Drive and a standalone section of Morrisville Parkway that has previously only been accessible from inside of the Preston Village subdivision. The work is scheduled to be complete by the end of 2010. In my opinion this will be a great benefit to overall traffic flow, connecting Davis Drive to NC Hwy 55. There will be a trade-off for a few sections of homes in the Preston Village and Preston LakeridgeTownhomes communities – they will have much greater access to major highways but will have increased traffic – for years the small standalone section of Morrisville Pkwy has been very quietly tucked away inside of the Preston Village subdivision.

Cary NC Group Wins Super Bowl Commercial Contest for Doritos
Congratulations to local Cary resident Josh Svoboda & his partners that won $650,000 for their winning Doritos Super Bowl Commercial - “Underdog”!
I was pulling for the group not only because of their local Cary ties but due to my friendship with Josh’s mother Cindy and his brother DJ – I volunteer with both of them at Hope Community Church.
Josh isn’t the only one in the family with creative talent – Josh’s autistic brother DJ travels on a regular basis, sharing his testimony and his story of how he has embraced his autism by creating his very own company – myimagiville.com
The winning commercial was filmed at Cary’s Fred G. Bond Park off High House Road. The group also won a runner-up spot for ‘Kids These Days” – filmed at Cary’s Waverly Place Shopping Center.

American Tobacco Trail – Cary – White Oak Park Access

What is the American Tobacco Trail?
It’s 22 miles of trails running from Cary to Durham – the trails are built over an old abandoned rail road track that dates back to the early 1900’s. The American Tobacco Trail’s almost perfectly flat – which makes sense when you think of it being where a railroad track used to be – along the trail you will find yourself in tunnels, under highways & on bridges.
The trail is open to walking / running / hiking / bicycle riding and horse back.
One of the American Tobacco Trail public access points is in Cary – on White Oak Church Road – this site which is right around the corner from Cary’s upscale Copperleaf Community, has restrooms and ample parking. If you haven’t explored the American Tobacco Trail you’re missing out – it’s incredible to think you can start out in Cary and ride your bike 20 plus miles and end up at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park! A special thank you to the Triangle Rails to Trails Conservatory Organization for their hard work making this dream become a reality – we are truly blessed here in the Cary area with the wonderful parks & trails!

Cary Group Preparing For Haiti Relief Trip
A tremendous amount of attention is focused on Haiti right now as they recover from the massive earthquake. People are scrambling trying to find a way they can help – well – here’s a way!
There is a local organization right here in Cary with infrastructure already in place in Haiti – they have a group leaving in the next 72-96 hours – they are looking for experienced medical / search & rescue or translators
If you’re a regular reader of this blog you know I have strong ties to Hope Community Church – Why do I bring this up? Through the members of Hope Community Church a foundation was started several years ago – the Hope for Haiti Foundation – the group has been making trips to Haiti over the past several years – the foundation received a huge boost when Hope Community Church decided to purchase and renovate 2 buildings in Haiti for a hospital and dormitory – that’s right Cary’s Hope Community Church is building a hospital in Haiti!

Cary Lochmere Home Owners Be on Alert!
Cary residents have the luxury of enjoying a high quality of life – which includes living in a Town of 140,000 people and not worrying much about crime – at least major crime – that’s why the news this week of several home break-ins while the families where home sleeping is big news & disturbing – the break ins occurred in the Lochmere area of Cary – a large planned unit development with lakes, walking trails, golf course etc (also home to yours truly).
Below is the press release from the Town of Cary – I usually do not cut and paste a blog post but with this I’m making an exception:
___________
Town of Cary Police Department Seeks Help in String of Home Burglaries
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 12, 2010
CARY, NC – The Town of Cary Police Department is asking citizens for their help in locating suspects involved with recent home burglaries. During the overnight hours of January 10, 2010 and January 12, 2010, suspects gained entry into three occupied homes in the Lochmere area of Cary. Stolen property includes televisions, purses, wallets, electronic equipment and jewelry. No one was harmed during the robberies.
“How or if these burglaries are related is still being investigated, but what we can say for sure is that it’s a very serious concern for us any time break-ins occur while families are sleeping, and we need everyone’s help in protecting against these criminals,” said Captain Mike Williams.
Christmas Eve at Hope Community Church, No Fish but 5,000 plus
Hope Community Church opened it’s doors on Christmas Eve for 4 identical worship services. No fish, but over 5,000 people attended the services.
The 1,500 seat auditorium was nearly packed for all 4 services. Okay, one clarification – the 4 services were not exactly identical – on paper they were supposed to be – the live donkey that made a brief appearance on stage the first few services decided to re-negotiate his contract and didn’t make it through all 4 services. The people that attended experienced friendly volunteers eager to serve, incredibly talented musicians and singers, and even a little snow at the end, but most importantly it provided an open door on Christmas eve for any and all to come hear of God’s love.

Town of Cary’s 1st Community Christmas Tree

Okay, so I added the word Christmas into the description of the tree, as the Town of Cary is calling it their Community Tree. It’s a pretty neat idea to generate community involvement. The town invited area businesses, Schools, Churches, Non-Profits and Clubs to create and submit an original ornament that represents their organization, thus the title “Community Tree“.
The ornaments adorn the official Town of Cary Community Tree, on display in Town Hall. The town also illuminates a 30′ tall cedar tree on the town hall grounds.
If you’re interested in your organization being represented on next years tree you can find the info on the Town of Cary’s site.
